The Conference is particularly interested in the following topics and proposals:

a) Twenty years after the war, as regards history and historical facts, the Croatian society has been deeply divided, and the Croatian people have not yet come to reconciliation. The depth of this division is reflected „diabolically“ in the opposed founding narratives of the contemporary Croatian state, and generally, of the Croatian society and people. It appears necessary to find the way of overcoming the divisions, because, without the reconciled memories ad intra, it is impossible to healthy participate ad extra, in the context of creating the transnational narrative EU identity. The Conference proposes to examine the current status of memories in Croatia, and the possibilities of reaching the consensus concerning the topics oriented towards the past, and generating ideological divisions. Furthermore, the objective is to compare the experiences of other countries in the processes of reconciliation and promotion of social cohesion. The Conference, however, is not only concerned with the past, but will try to examine the binomial past-future, being memories functional in creating the individual and collective identity. Since the identity is „broader“ then the memory, comprising the present and anticipating the future, the emphasis is put on modules through which the contemporary policies of identity drive memories. This means that, besides what to remember, a key concern mainly of the historians, the conference will try to reflect on how to remember, of concern mainly, until now, to philosophers and theologians. However, both these questions have the implicit ethical dimension: what to remember – each historical expression represents the selective process exposed to „presentism“; and how to remember – remembrances are not only the information about the past, but also the tool to manage the present and the future.

b) We propose to consider the problem of Croatian unreconciled memories within the phenomenon of memories/remembrances in the context of scientific knowledge, due to the fact that in the past few decades a memory boom occurred, not only in the field of social arts and humanities, but also in the public discourse. In the „century of the brain“, the interest for the phenomenon of memories/remembrances, spread from the field of neurological to the field of social researches, and philosophical and theological considerations. The contemporary knowledge on memories assert that memories, even if individually designated, represent social (M. Halbwachs) and cultural (J. Assmann) construct, and make thus a dangerous tool in forming personal and collective identities. The sensitivity of memory issues is enhanced by its dual quality, and reflected in the possibility to use the remembrances as a victim’s shield in the shape of eternal memory representing the only salvation for the victim (E. Wiesel), but also serving as a sword of vengeance against the perpetrators (M. Wolf). Hence almost the pseudo-religious commandments of eternal memory, concerned with tragedies and evils of the 20th century, especially the Holocaust. The duality of memories/remembrances is, therefore, a warning to all political, media, religious and educational institutions and stakeholders, pointing to the key role of memories in suppressing historical trauma, producing transgenerational conflicts not only between different ethnical, but also amongst same ethnical and other social groups. The objective of the Conference is to verify possibilities and commitments to veracious memories, which particularly in theological perspective cannot be reduced only to the mere differentiation between the victim and the perpetrator, good and evil, but aims at reconciliation as the final scope of memories. The status of the Croatian society and people, being unreconciled ad intra and ad extra, confirms that the contemporary ideologies have not been able to follow the spiritual and civilisation standards of veracious memories and reconciliation. How close is EU to these standards? It should be critically verified. We, therefore, invite all the conference participants to clarify at least two concerns of the contemporary notions on memory reconciliation, meeting at all identity levels of Croatian people, society and state. Firstly, our national concern is represented through the anachronic observance of good images of "Messianic" totalitarian ideologies and their great leaders. The moral obligation, and a precondition for the reconciliation, is to clarify if and how are this "made-up idols" in correlation with the "damnatio memoriae" of direct victims of such idols. Second concern, representing the spiritual condition of the postmodern society, is reflected through the cessation of interest for the past, since the past, with its unreconciled memories troubles and disturbs the creation of the new consumer identity, pinned to the narrow strip of the "carpe diem" present. Some authors claim that one of the reasons might be the postmodern breaking of the organic link with the past, and particularly demanding veracious crisis memories (P. Norra). During the preparations for the Conference, some possibly interesting topics have come out. The following list must not be limiting, but inviting, allowing you to propose any new topic from your own field of expertise, interest, or competencies.

Conference topics: - Phenomenon of memories – concepts, definitions, explanations - Memory and politics of identity - Memories and justice (the culture of veracious memories - P. Ricoeur) - Memory, reconciliation and social inclusion (relation to victims and perpetrators from the past; conflict between the state truth and individual experiences; silenced memory and "contra" memory, memory of emarginated groups) - Memory and historical truth – interrelation - Memory and totalitarianism; instrumentalisation of memories - Pedagogy and ethics of memory; practical aspects of memories - Unreconciled memory in the Croatian society and ideological scissions - Ideological anachronisms within the unreconciled memory: ethical commitments and political skills of deconstruction of totalitarian ideologies and their subtle derivations. Positive European examples - Ideological culture and aesthetics within the public space - Ideological historiography in the pedagogical-educational sector - Plurality of memories/identities in the Croatian society - Memory and social cohesion in the Croatian society - Religion/religions and memory - Christianity and memory - Memoria passionis and political theology - Role of the catholic Church in Croatia in the process of reconciliation - Lustration – comparison of Croatia with other post-communist countries - Forgetting or forgiveness
